819,089. Brake drums. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Feb. 20, 1957 [Feb. 22, 1956], No. 5758/57. Class 103 (1). A brake drum 1 for a motor vehicle is characterized in that the braking surface 2 is manufactured with a conical shape, its inside diameter at the open end D of the drum being greater, for example by a few millimetres, than the inside diameter at the closed end d of the drum. It is stated that by this arrangement, the brake shoes 3, when expanded against the conical surface 2 of the brake drum, are subject to a lateral reaction which causes the web part 4 of each shoe to press axially of the shoe-suspension bolt 6 against a collar 5 on the latter which is mounted on the stationary back plate 7 to provide guiding means and prevent noise-producing vibrations. Particles of brake lining material worn off by abrasion and water are stated to escape more readily with this arrangement.
