Abstract

666,342. Internal-shoe and drum brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. June 9, 1950 [June 28, 1949], No. 17053/49. Class 103 (i). In a brake with internally expanding shoes 19, each shoe has an associated finger piece 18 projecting through the web of the shoe and lightly engaging the drum when the brake is off, to maintain a predetermined clearance between the shoe and the drum. The finger is carried at the end of a yieldable lever 23 pivoted at 16 to the back-plate and engaging near its midpoint an abutment 22 on the brake shoe. Upon application of the brake the portion of the lever 23 between the abutment 22 and the finger-piece yields to permit engagement of the shoe with the drum, and upon release the lever recovers its original shape to withdraw the shoe from engagement. The finger piece carries a small pad of friction material, the wearing of this pad and the shoe lining maintaining the shoe clearance substantially constant. Instead of being integral with the end of the lever 23, the finger piece 18 may be a separate member bolted to the lever, Fig. 4 (not shown). Specification 519,787 is referred to.
