Abstract

788,320. Friction clutches. BRITISH BELTING & ASBESTOS, Ltd. Feb. 15, 1956 [March 8, 1955], No. 6781/55. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a friction element for mounting on carrier members such as brake bands, brake shoes, clutches or the like, a friction liner 1 consists of a suitably shaped block of friction material having elongated concave recesses 2 (see Figs. 2 and 5) in its rear face disposed at any suitable angle to the longitudinal axis of the liner. Anchorage members 3 are disposed and retained in the recesses 2 by a backing plate 4 which is fixed to the rear face of the friction liner 1 by bonding or riveting. Studs or screws 6 are inserted through holes 5 and 8 in the backing- plate 4 and brake band 9 respectively to engage threaded holes 7 in achorage members 3. The recesses 2 may be provided on the underside of the backing plate 4 instead of the rear face of the friction liner 1. Certain modifications are described and illustrated in the Specification; among them being the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 13 in which the anchorage members (Fig. 15) may extend the full width of the friction liner in slots 18 formed by transverse recesses 20 on the underside of spaced backing- plate sections 21, 22, 23, thus facilitating the removal of the friction liner in a lateral direction when the screw fixing means are loosened, leaving the anchorage means in position on the band or carrier member.
