Abstract
772,070. Disc brakes. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. April 4,1955 [Nov. 3, 1954], No. 9726/55. Class 103 (1). In a fluid-pressure operated brake, lock means are provided for mechanically engaging pistonpins, extending from the pistons associated with the pads of friction material, such as to hold the latter in frictional engagement with the rotatable member. In the embodiment illustrated applied to a " spot-type " disc brake associated with an axle wherein Fig. 3 is a section through 3-3 of Fig. 1, the brake disc 2 is secured to a hub ring 3 carried by a rotatable axle 4 and is braked by means of pads of friction material 12 which are backed by pistons 11, operating in chambers 8 and 9 in a fixed housing 5, which may normally be actuated by hydraulic pressure into frictional engagement with the sides of the disc. As may be seen from Fig. 1 there are two pairs of pistons effecting frictional engagement; one pair being actuated alternatively by mechanical actuation means. The mechanical actuation means comprises wedge-shaped control links 20, operating in slots 19 in guide blocks 17 secured to the brake housing 5, which are connected to mechanical braking members 21. Secured to each of the pistons 11 which are to be actuated mechanically is a piston-pin 14 extending into the guide-blocks 17 and provided with a slot 16 through which passes the control link 20. Thus these pistons may be actuated by hydraulic fluid via line 6, bores 10 and chambers 8 and 9 or alternatively by mechanical actuation by exerting a pull in the direction of the arrow indicated in Fig. 1, on mechanical braking members 21. Springs 23 allow the control links 20 to be returned to their inoperative positions when the mechanical braking members 21 are released, and after application of fluid pressure has, by additional compression of blocks 12, eased or released the pressure exerted upon the control links 20 by the frictional action of the inclined wedging surface 22 and the slot 16 in piston-pins 14. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 732,724.
