Abstract

771,113. Winch disc brakes. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS), Ltd. June 18, 1954 [July 9, 1953], No. 19080/53. Class 78 (5). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a rope winding apparatus the braking device consists of a disc brake comprising at least one disc connected with the winding drum and rotatable therewith, the size of each brake disc being frictionally gripped between a pair of opposed brake shoes, carrying friction linings, which are urged relatively towards one another by resilient applying means and released by fluid pressure. Two discs are formed by the outwardly directed flanges 51 and 52 which normally serve to retain the rope on the winding drum. Four brake units are provided as indicated at 55, 56, 57 and 58; each capable of a slight sliding movement parallel to the axis of the drum so that the annular friction linings 59, 60 are spring applied with an equal force to the sides of the flanges 51 and 52 and released by fluid pressure means 43. An alternative arrangement is described incorporating a " spot type " disc brake arrangement in which pads of friction material are spring-urged into frictional contact with a disc associated with the winding drum and are released by hydraulic pressure.
