Abstract

Applied by running axle or wheel; blocks and .shoes acting on drums. - In a brake comprising a fixed and a floating pair of expanding shoes separate operating cams and mechanism are provided for each pair of shoes and one of the floating shoes is provided with a slot engaged by an extension of the cam of the fixed shoes, whereby the fixed shoes are operated by the floating shoes and the fixed shoes can be operated without operating the floating shoes. The brake shown comprises a pair of shoes 2, 3 pivoted at 4 upon a plate 7 fixed to the axle casing 8 and adapted to be applied to the drum 1 by a cam 5 also pivoted to the plate 7. A second pair of shoes 10, 11 is pivoted at 12 upon a plate 23 freely mounted upon the axle casing 8 and adapted to be applied by the cam 13 also pivoted on the plate 23. A projection 16 on the cam 5 passes through a slot in the shoe 10. The spindle of the earn 13 has an arm 12 connected to a hand or foot lever and when this is actuated to apply the shoes 10, 11 to the drum, these shoes with the carrier 23 rotate to a limited extent causing the end of the slot in the shoe 10 to exert pressure on the projection 16 of the cam and thus to apply the shoes 2, 3 to the drum. The spindle of the cams may be provided with an arm 9 connected to a hand or foot lever for operating the shoes 2, 3 independently of the shoes 10, 11. The two pairs of shoes instead of being disposed in the same plane as shown may be arranged side by side.
