Abstract

Actuated or applied by running axle or wheel; blocks acting on drums.-In vehicle brakes of the kind comprising a pair of pivoted shoes 3, 4 adapted to be engaged with the brake drum 1 by a cam 10 actuated by a relay lever 11 carrying a brake shoe 13 that tends to revolve in the drum when frictionally engaged with it, the leverage exerted by the relay lever is constant throughout its movement and that on the cam varies only slightly. The lever 11 is mounted by means of a slot 12 of the form shown on the wheel axle 2, so that it is coaxial with the brake drum and may move either radially or angularly with respect to the axle. When the cam 17 is rotated by the brake-actuating shaft 18, the radial movement of the lever 11 applies the shoe 13 to the drum and its subsequent angular movement applies the shoes 3, 4 to the drum through the lever 11, links 15, 16 and cam 10. The lengths of the links 15, 16 may be varied to alter the leverage between the members 10, 11.
