Abstract

344,598. Brakes. STEIN, R., 5012, North 9th Street, and BERLIZHEIMER, D. T., 2020, North Park Avenue, both in Philadelphia, U.S.A. Jan. 17, 1930, No. 1742. [Class 103 (i).] Blocks and shoes aciing on drums.-A brake comprises a wedge-shaped shoe adapted to be moved circumferentially so as to engage between inner and outer drums eccentrically arranged with respect to each other and one of which is fixed and the other rotating. A wedge-shaped shoe 20 having inner and outer braking surfaces terminating at A, B so as to be of equal area is disposed between an inner drum 17 secured eccentrically to the fixed axle 11 of a vehicle and a rotating drum 16 mounted upon the wheel 10. The shoe is connected by one or more bolts 20a to a plate 23 pivoted at the centre 25 of the fixed drum 17. To apply the brake the plate 23 is turned by an arm 26 pivoted at 27 on the fixed drum and engaging lugs 29 on the plate. The shoe 20 is thus forced between the drums. The hole in the shoe for the bolt 20a is radially elongated to permit the shoe to bear equally upon the two drums when applied. A retracting spring 33 for the shoe is provided. The brake is shown mounted upon the steering wheel of a vehicle, the arm 26 being actuated by a shaft having a universal joint in line with the steering pivot.
