731,574. External shoe-drum brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. July 21, 1954 [June 18, 1953], No. 16823/53. Class 103 (1). A brake for road and other vehicles comprises a ring or rim 10, rotatable with the vehicle wheel, in combination with opposed arcuate shoes 14 each guided for radial movement in a housing 17 mounted on a stationary back - plate 19 and each adapted to be forced into engagement with the outer surface of the ring 10 by a lever 23 pivotally mounted in the housing 17 and actuated by an hydraulic cylinder 30 on the outer side of the backplate 19. A wire hairpin spring 31, mounted on a pin or peg 32 on the lever and partially embracing the pivot pin 24, acts to return the lever 23 and prevent rattle.
