Locking by frictional detents. - The existing brakes of a vehicle are applied automatically upon movement of the vehicle in a reverse direction by means of a drum or ring connected to the brakes and adapted to be carried around to a limited extent with the vehicle wheel by the engagement of an arm or lever on the drum with the wheel spokes. As applied to the steering wheel of a vehicle a drum 8 mounted upon the vertical pivot 1 of the stub axle so as to be capable of limited rotary movement determined by slots is connected by a cord 19 to the existing operating lever 5 of an internal expanding brake acting upon the drum 4 mounted on the wheel. The drum 8 has pivoted thereon at 13 a bell-' crank lever 14, 16 adapted for engagement with the wheel spokes. The arrangement is such that as long as the wheel is turning in a direction opposite to that of the arrow 15 the arm 16 engages the wheel spokes and the device is inoperative but should the wheel commence to turn in the opposite direction the arm 17 swings into engagement with the spokes as indicated in Fig. 8 and the drum 8 is thereby turned to apply the brakes bv the cord 19. The lever 14, 16 may be locked in an inoperative position when desired. In the modification shown in Fig. 10, a pair of these levers is mounted upon diametrically opposite pivots 13 on the drum 8 so that the automatic operation of the brakes by either direction of rotation of the wheel may be effected. For this purpose a cord 21 additional to the cord 19 is fitted.
