[Class 103 (i).] Relates to vehicle brakes of the type in which one member has one or more wedge-shaped frictional surfaces engaging one or more wedgeshaped grooves in another relatively rotatable member. In one form, Fig. 2, two external pivoted shoes 2 are operated to grip a pulley by means of a spring-pressed plunger 12 bearing against an extension 13 of one shoe, a leveroperated cam 8 being provided to release the brake. It is stated that separation of the shoes by the cam 8 may effect "interior" braking. To prevent violent application of the brakes spring-pressed plungers 35, Fig. 12, are secured in cylinders 37 on the brake shoes and have a limited displacement beyond the shoes so that they come into contact with the drum 4 before the shoes. In another form, Fig. 10, an external chain-band, the links 21 of which carry the wedge-shaped friction lining, is contracted on a revolving drum, against the action of circular leaf-springs 22 passing through the links, and is also released by means of rollers 32 on an operating lever gripping two scissors-like levers 30 pivoted together at 31 and connected to the ends 29 of the band. In a modification, rollers 24, Fig. 8, on the ends of the chain are forced towards one another to contract the chain when a swingle-bar 23 having inclined sides engaging the rollers is moved radially from the drum. Figs. 13 and 15 show operating means comprising a lever pivoted at 42 to an extension of one shoe and having a roller 41 bearing on an extension of another shoe.
