Energy-absorbing elements; blocks and shoes; blocks acting on drums.-A brake comprises a V-shaped brake drum formed by two separate conical cheeks assembled one against the other along their common base. The drum comprises a conical part 3 and a truncated conical part 6 joined by flanges 4 at the edges, the part 3 being bolted to the wheel. The shoes 7, Fig. 2, are pivoted at 8 and are operated by a pivoted lever 15 having sockets 16 in which fit the cylindrical ends of connecting rods 17, the other ends of which fit in steel-lined grooves 14 in the brake shoes. The sockets 16 are lubricated by ducts through the lever 15. The shoes comprise raised parts having inclined surfaces fitting within the brake drum and carrying the friction lining 12.
