262,374. Bergische Stahl-Industrie. Dec. 3, 1925, [Convention date]. Acting on flat sides of discs; blocks and shoes; force-transmitting mechanism. -In a friction brake for railway vehicles in which the brake shoes are moved parallel with the axle of the vehicle and co-operate with a disc between, the shoes are moved in one direction only by the force-transmitting means and have no positive connection with these means. As shown in Fig. 2, a double disc comprising plates a and connecting devices a<1> is made in halves bolted together around the axle. The brake shoes c<4> are guided by members f connected by intermediate plates and suspended by links q from the vehicle floor &c. The shoes comprise a friction facing c, Fig. 5, of impregnated fabric, wood, asbestos, &c., preferably with a polished surface, riveted by conical rivets c' to a metal plate c<2> secured by bolts c<3> to the shoes c<4>, and pins c<5> on the shoes pass through the members f and have adjustable screws acted upon by the short arms of bell-crank levers d pivoted to the members f at g. The pins c<5> are surrounded by brake-releasing springs c<6> in casings p. The long arms of the levers d are connected by a chain h passing over a pulley i which is connected by a flexible tie n passing around and between pulleys on a double-armed operating lever to a similar pulley i connected to the brakes of the other axle of the vehicle.
