Abstract

823,579. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. [Dec. 16, 1957 [Dec. 15, 1956], No. 38338/56. Class 103 (1). In a disc brake for railway vehicles in which calliper levers 15, 16 are adapted to be actuated by a fluid pressure actuator 19 to apply friction pads 13 against opposite faces of a brake disc secured to an axial shaft 10 of the vehicle, the levers 15 and 16 are coupled together adjacent the periphery of the-disc by a transverse coupling member 28 connected to the lower end of a flexible leaf spring 29 secured at its other end to the vehicle frame on bracket 31. The spring 29 permits sufficient lateral movement of the calliper levers 15, 16 to enable the brake to be applied but automatically centralizes the levers and friction pads when the brake is released. The coupling member 28 is in the form of a rotatable turn-buckle nut which is adjustable on oppositely screw-threaded portions of members 25, pivoted at 26 to levers 15, 16 to permit adjustment for wear of the friction pads 13. The brakes may be applied mechanically; in which case the inner calliper lever 16 on each axle of the vehicle are connected bv flexible pull-rods 41 to opposite ends of a short horizontal lever 42 mounted on a vertical shaft 43 which is angularly movable in bearings on a bracket 44 secured to the fluid pressure actuator. A lever 45 mounted on one end of the shaft is coupled through a convenient form of rigging to a hand lever or the like. Balancing of the braking forces in 4-wheeled bogeys or vehicles is obtained through a short equalizing lever 46 to the centre of which is connected a pull-rod from the hand lever or rigging. The brake pads may be replaced when worn since each pad is bonded to a steel backing plate of which the upper end is engaged under a stepped flange 48 on the brake shoe and the lower end is retained 'by a keeper 49 which is held'in place by a nut 50 on a screw-threaded latch member 51 pivoted to the shoe and engaging a slot in the keeper. By slackening the nut, the latch member 51 is swung down and the keeper thus released to allow the friction pad and its backing plate to be withdrawn in a downward direction.
