Abstract

278,913. Graphite Products, Ltd., and Ridley, C. L. Nov. 27, 1926. Energy - absorbing elements; blocks and shoes; band brakes. - In a vehicle or other brake one or both of the cooperating surfaces are constituted in part by strips, blocks or plugs formed of or containing graphite or other solid non-metallic substance or mixture having lubricating qualities, these plugs being formed to the required shape and inserted i n t o correspondingly shaped perforations or grooves in a brake band, shoe or other braking element. In the construction shown a number of plugs E, which are preferably undercut or taper inwardly as shown, are inserted into holes in brake blocks B of cast iron riveted to a contractible steel band A, which forms a retaining means or backing for preventing the plugs from being driven outwardly. Preferably the plugs are distributed, e.g. as shown in Fig. 8, in such a manner that they wipe the whole width of the drum D or other co-operating surface. Modifications are described in which the plugs are applied to a brake drum, to the brake block of an ordinary railway wagon brake, and to the shoes of an internal expanding brake.
