Abstract

1337257 Brake shoes for shoe drum brakes GIRLING Ltd 7 Dec 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 62932/69 Heading F2E The Specification discloses various means whereby a lining component 116 of a brake shoe 110 for an internal shoe-drum brake assembly is detachably connected to a platform 112 thereof so that renewal of the lining component 116 will not involve dismantling of the brake assembly. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the right-hand side of the shoe 110 represents the inner edge of the shoe 110 adjacent the back plate (not shown) of the assembly and the brake drum (not shown) has its braking surface extending from right to left towards the outer edge of the shoe 110. The lining component 116 comprises a carrier plate 118 having a friction lining 120 bonded thereto, and the platform 112 has a number of L-shaped projections 122 welded thereto along the outer edge, which projections engage in respective slots 124 formed in the friction lining 120. A clip 126 attached to the carrier plate 118 is bolted to a lug 128 on the platform 112. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), the bolt and lug arrangement is replaced by a number of spring clips (226) which engage in slots (232) in the inner edge of the lining component (216) and grip the undersurface of the platform (212). In Fig. 3 the carrier plate 318 has a right-angled edge portion 334 engaging in a slot 336 in the platform 312 and a spring clip 344 fitted into slots 338, 340, 342 is bolted to one of two webs 314 which are integral with platform 312. Fig. 4 has a spring clip 434 integral with carrier plate 418 at the inner edge but at the outer edge the L-shaped projections are replaced by rivets 448, and Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) illustrate alternative forms of these rivets. Fig. 7 (not shown) illustrates a form of rivet (752) for the inner edge of the shoe, and in Fig. 8 (not shown) a spring clip (834) integral with the carrier plate (818) engages in a slot (836) in the platform (812). To remove the lining components a dust cover (not shown) on the back plate is removed, the locking means (viz., spring clip or bolt) is loosened or removed, and the lining component may then be slid out. An anti-corrosion shim may be fitted, or anticorrosion agent applied between the platform and the lining component.
