Abstract
A brake shoe (2) comprises a first part (4) which is for fixing to a vehicle about a wheel hub of the vehicle, and a second pant (6) which is provided with a brake lining (8) and which is releasably securable to the first part (4) by screw bolts (26) or a clip arrangement, and the brake shoe (2) is such that renewal of the brake lining (8) is effected by leaving the first part (4) on the vehicle and removing the second part (6) from the first part (4). <IMAGE>
Description
A BRAKE SHOE
This invention relates to a brake shoe.
As is well known, the vast majority of vehicles on the road have brake shoes, at least on the rear brakes of the vehicles. The brake shoes are held in position on the vehicles about wheel hubs by means of springs. The brake shoes are notoriously difficult to remove and replace for the purposes of renewing brake shoe linings.
It is an aim of the present invention to reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the invention, there is provided a brake shoe comprising a first part which is for fixing to a vehicle about a wheel hub of the vehicle, and a second part which is provided with a brake lining and which is releasably securable to the first part, and the brake shoe being such that renewal of the brake lining is effected by leaving the first part on the vehicle and removing the second part from the first part.
The brake shoe of the present invention enables brake linings to be renewed in a quick, simple and convenient manner. This is because the first part can be left on the vehicle whilst the second part can be removed from the first part for the purpose of renewing the brake lining, either by putting a new brake lining on the second part or, more usually, by fitting a replacement second part with a new brake lining.
Generally, the first part can be constructed in the same manner as the underneath of known brake shoes so that the first part can fit to the vehicle in exactly the same manner as known brake shoes fixed to a vehicle.
As indicated above, this will invariably be by means of a pair of springs. The springs are hooked at each end and one end of each spring locates in a hole in the first part, whilst the other end of each spring locates in an anchor hole on the vehicle.
A further advantage of the brake shoe of the present invention is that less metal is involved in exchanging brake shoes. Hitherto, entire known brake shoes have been exchanged. With the brake shoe of the present invention, only the second part needs to be exchanged and this second part will be made of less metal than the entire brake shoe.
Preferably, the second part is releasably securable to the first part by at least one screw bolt. Preferably, there are two of the screw bolts. If desired, the second part may be releasably securable to the first part by means other than screw bolts, for example by means of a clip arrangement.
Advantageously, the second part has a locating plate which fits between a pair of stop members on the first part. The locating plate and the pair of stop members act together to help to firmly retain the first and the second part together during use. Other types of locating arrangements may be employed if desired.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is an exploded perspective view of a brake shoe.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a brake shoe 2 comprising a first part 4 and a second part 6. The first part 4 is for fixing to a vehicle (not shown) about a wheel hub (not shown) of the vehicle. The second part 6 is provided with a brake lining 8. The second part 6 is releasably securable to the first part 4. The brake shoe 2 is such that renewal of the brake lining 8 is effected by leaving the first part 4 on the vehicle and removing the second part 6 from the first part 4.
The second part 4 has a locating plate 10 which fits between a pair of stop members 12 on the first part 4. As can be seen from the drawing, the stop members 12 are right angled members.
The brake lining 8 is secured to the second part 6 in a standard manner by rivets 14 locating in rivet holes 16.
The first part 4 is constructed in a generally known manner apart from the stop member 12 and the fact that the second part 6 is releasably securable to the first part 4. Thus the first part 4 has a number of known apertures 18 and slots 20.
In order to assemble the second part 6 on the first part 4, the two parts are brought together such that the locating plate 10 fits between the stop members 14. At this position, a pair of holes 22 in the locating plate 10 align with a pair of holes 24 in the first part 4.
A pair of fastening means in the form of screw bolts 26 can then be screwed through the apertures 22, 24 to securely retain the second part 6 on the first part 4.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawing has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the second part 6 may be retained on the first part 4 by means other than the two screw bolts 26. Also, another type of locating arrangement other than the locating plate 10 and the stop members 12 may be employed.
Claims (7)
1. A brake shoe comprising a first part which is for fixing to a vehicle about a wheel hub of the vehicle, and a second part which is provided with a brake lining and which is releasably securable to the first part, and the brake shoe being such that renewal of the brake lining is effected by leaving the first part on the vehicle and removing the second part from the first part.
2. A brake shoe according to claim I in which the first part is adapted to be fixed to the vehicle about the wheel hub of the vehicle by means of a pair of springs.
3. A brake shoe according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the second part is releasably securable to the first part by at least one screw bolt.
4. A brake shoe according to claim 3 in which there are two of the screw bolts.
