Blocks and shoes; energy-absorbing elements.- In an internally expanding brake for motor and other vehicles in which the shoes and the drum are provided with friction surfaces having one or more annular ribs and grooves, the friction element on the drum is laterally removable to facilitate assembly and axially .adjustable, the elements on the shoes may also be axially adjustable. A ring s of wedge-shaped cross-section is secured by bolts f to the brake drum a and is adapted to engage with a groove in the brake shoe c. The ring d may be made in two halves to facilitate fitting, or the shoe c may comprise detachable halves assembled by means of bolts k, Fig. 2, in which case the ring d may be integral with the drum a if the latter is detachable from the side disc m and comprises two superposed halves. Before the bolts f are tightened the shoes c are moved against the drum and the ring d can move laterally, as the bolts f are arranged in slots e, to allow the ribs and grooves to register accurately. Washers i close the slots e. In a modification of the invention the liner d is shown provided with two ribs coacting with two grooves in the brake shoes. In a further modification the ring d is shown provided with a groove and the shoe with a rib. The detachable halves of the shoes shown in Fig. 2 and the lining d may be stamped from metal plate to render them elastic. The grooves and ribs may have curved, corrugated or saw-edged cross-sections.
