Abstract

488,382. Friction surfaces for brakes. SMALZI, P., and TOSONI, D. T. Feb. 11, 1937, No. 4109. Convention date, Feb. 11, 1936. [Class 103 (i)] Brake blocks or linings for cycles, automobiles &c. have the friction surface divided into elements by a relatively large number of grooves so that each element is so small as to be deformed under the braking pressure, some or all of the grooves extending transversely completely across the block or lining and being perpendicular to the surface while the width of a groove is substantially less than the distance between them. Figs. 1, 4 show blocks with two arrangements of grooves. The grooves may instead be of zigzag form. The material may be a compound with a base of rubber or fibre. Channels may be formed in the bottom of the grooves, Fig. 1, to drain away mud and water. The elasticity of the block may be increased by the provision of interior passages as in Fig. 4. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the friction surface may have cup-shaped recesses instead of grooves. Further, in the case of large surfaces, the grooves or recesses may be filled with a malleable metal such as aluminium or brass, the metal being level with the surface. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
