Abstract

A brake shoe liner (1) for drum brakes comprises a rectangular strip of friction material the major face (2) of which, opposite that intended to be fixed, in use, to a brake shoe, has a plurality of parallel grooves (3) inclined to the longitudinal sides of the strip. The brake shoe liner makes it possible to avoid the formation of a continuous film of water between the brake shoe liner and the drum and the consequent impairment of the braking effect when braking in wet conditions. Preferably, grooves (3) are inclined at angle of 45 DEG to the longitudinal sides and their depth is about one half the thickness of the liner. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Drum brake shoe liners The present invention relates to brake shoe liners for drum brakes.
A known type of brake shoe liner consists of a rectangular strip of friction material which is fitted to the curved surface of a brake shoe. The liner conventionally has two smooth major faces one of which is intended to be fixed by adhesive or riveting to the shoe, whilst the opposite face acts on the inner surface of a brake drum during braking.
A serious drawback of conventional brake shoe liners is their impaired performance when wet. In wet conditions it is in fact possible for a continuous film of water to form on the braking surface of the liner, reducing the friction, upon braking, between the shoe and the drum, and reducing the braking effect.
The object of the present invention is to provide a brake shoe liner which on the one hand avoids the formation of a continuous film of water between the liner and the drum under wet conditions and as a result does not exhibit any marked reduction of braking performance when wet, without on the other hand entailing substantial additional manufacturing costs compared to those of conventional brake shoe liners.
The present invention accordingly provides a brake shoe liner for drum brakes comprising an elongate strip of friction material, in which the major face of the strip opposite that intended to be fixed, in use, to a brake shoe is provided with a plurality of parallel grooves inclined to the longitudinal sides of the strip.
In use, the grooves in the outer face of the liner create a system of channels which, in the event of operation in wet conditions, allow the discharge of the water which would otherwise tend to form a continuous film between the liner and the drum.
The accompanying drawings illustrate, by way of example, a liner according to the invention, shown in perspective.
The reference numeral 1 indicates a liner of friction material for drum brakes, in the form of an elongate, in this case, rectangular strip having a thickness typically of from three to six millimetres.
The liner has a smooth inner major face intended to be fixed by adhesive or by riveting to a curved brake shoe of a drum brake and an outer major face 2 intended to come into frictional contact with the internal surface of a brake drum during braking. The face 2 has a plurality of parallel grooves 3 of rectangular cross section, inclined to the longitudinal sides of the liner 1.
Preferably, the grooves 3 are inclined at an angle of 450 to the longitudinal sides of the major faces of the liner 1. The depth of the grooves 3 is equal to about one half of the thickness of the liner.
The cross-sectional profile of the grooves 3 could be different from the rectangular profile illustrated by way of example.
1. A brake shoe liner for drum brakes comprising an elongate strip of friction material, in which the major face of the strip opposite that intended to be fixed, in use, to a brake shoe is provided with a plurality of parallel grooves inclined to the longitudinal sides of the strip.
2. A brake shoe liner according to Claim 1, in which the said grooves are inclined at an angle of substantially 450 to the said longitudinal sides of the strip.
3. A brake shoe liner according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which the depth of the said grooves is equal to about one half of the thickness of the liner.
4. A brake shoe liner substantially as herein described with reference to and as shown in the accompany drawing.
