A brake shoe or block has a friction face provided with a plurality of equally - spaced first grooves 3 formed or provided in the friction face in a direction transverse to the direction of rotation of the surface to be braked and one or more second grooves 2 cut in the friction face arranged in an oblique, zig-zag or serpentine path to cross at least one of the first grooves. The shoe may be of the configuration shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with vent openings 13 provided in the block for cooling purposes. Alternatively, the block may be of the configuration shown in Figs. 4 or 5. A reinforcing band of steel may be incorporated in the friction body or secured thereto. The block may be supported in a holder and a layer of heat-insulating material, such as asbestos, may be arranged between the block and the holder.
