Abstract

708,283. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. June 20, 1952 [July 7, 1951], No. 16170/50. Class 103(1) Friction pads for disc brakes, which may be segmental, as in Fig. 2, or circular, as in Fig. 3, comprise one lamination 1, 3 of material of high frictional resistance to produce the braking force and a second lamination 2 or 4 of a material of substantially different hardness which will give an indication that the main friction layer 1 or 3 has worn away. The lower layer 2 or 4 is preferably a material of such low frictional resistance that it is made obvious to the operator by the change in deceleration produced by a given pedal pressure that the friction pads require renewal. Alternatively the lower layer may be such as to give an audible squealing note when in contact with the disc. The construction shown in Fig. 3 is more economical than that in Fig. 2 in that a further layer 5 of a material having no appreciable frictional quantities is used to make up the necessary thickness of the pad. The form of friction pad described is stated to be suitable for disc brakes as described in Specification 688,382. Specification 711,059 also is referred to.
