931,452. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. March 21, 1960 [March 21, 1959], No. 9882/59. Class 103 (1). In a calliper type disc brake a friction pad 13 mounted on a backing plate 14 is urged into engagement with the brake disc (not shown) by a piston 12 working in a cylinder 11 of the calliper 10 and an air space 22 is provided between the piston 12 and the backing plate 14 and grooves or notches 23, 24 are formed in the mating surfaces of the backing plate (Fig. 3), or the piston (Fig. 6), to provide air passages through which the air space 22 communicates with the outside atmosphere. Instead of the calliper being fixed as shown with axiallyaligned cylinders provided on each side of the disc, the calliper and the disc may be relatively movable, the pad or pads on one side of the disc being secured directly to the calliper and the pad or pads on the other side of the disc being associated with one or more cylinders.
