Abstract
1,054,042. Disc brakes. SOC. ANON. D.B.A. Sept. 26, 1963 [Sept. 28, 1962], No. 38007/63. Heading F2E. A disc brake includes a fixed support 8, an actuator 16 to apply a pair of friction pads 10, 12 to opposite sides of a rotatable disc 2, and guides 26 having operative surfaces 36 each arranged asymmetrically on either side of the plane of the disc 2. The pads 10, 12 are mounted in a stirrup 4 which floatingly straddles the disc and which carries a pressure cylinder 14 having a fluid-operated piston 16 which can also be actuated by a lever 20. Automatic wear-adjusting means 18 affects both means of operation. The piston 16 carries a projection 22 extending into a slot in the pad 10 which limits movement in a radial direction. The pad 12 is connected in the same way to the adjacent part of the stirrup which carries projections which engage slots in the pad (not shown). Application of the pad 10 by the piston also causes the pad 12 to be applied to the disc by reaction. Resilient members 34 are compressed between recesses 38 at the ends of the stirrup 4 and the inclined surfaces 36 of the guides 26 and urge lugs 32 on the latter against the outside edges of the pads 10 and 12. The resilient members 34 comprise rubber envelopes filled with gas under pressure which is occluded in the closed pores of spongy rubber. In an alternative construction (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) the members 34 comprise rubber tubes reinforced inside with split elastic cylinders.
