Abstract
794,926. Aircraft skid brakes. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd. Oct. 19, 1956 [Oct. 20, 1955], No. 30033/55. Class 103 (1). In a skid brake fitted to an aircraft undercarriage system, the friction pad 15 which is adapted to engage the ground is provided with holes 18 through which liquid coolant is supplied from an accumulator cylinder 22 when pneumatically-actuated separator piston 24 is moved to the right; the flow of liquid coolant from cylinder 22 being controlled by a solenoidoperated valve 26 which allows a predetermined maximum rate of discharge so that the latent heat of vaporization is related to the heat generated by friction. The friction pad 15 is attached to shoe 10 by bolts 17 extending into backing plate 16 to which the friction pad 15 is bonded. Transverse slots 29 are provided in the friction pad to reduce the tendency of disintegrated material to enter the liquid feed holes and cause clogging.
