601,998. Brakes; vehicle wheels. OLAER PATENT CO., and COMPAGNIE GENERALE POUR L'EQUIPEMENT AERONAUTIQUE. June 28, 1945, No. 16540. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1943. [Classes 103 (i) and 144 (i)] A vehicle wheel particularly for aircraft, comprises a pair of conical brake drums integral with the wheel body and fitted with heat-non- conducting friction linings, wholly metallic non- rotatable conical friction members for engaging the drums and cooling webs on the drums and friction members. Prevention of the transmission of the.heat due to braking to the wheel rim is thus substantially prevented. As shown for an aircraft land wheel, conical drums 3, 4 integral with the wheel body are lined with a non-conducting friction material 5, 6. Wholly metallic non-rotatable conical members 7, 8 are arranged to be moved axially against the action of springs 13, 14 to engage the members 3, 4 by pins 27 and pistons 9, 10 in a cylinder 11 which is provided in the fixed axle 1 and is supplied with pressure fluid by a conduit 12. Vanes 15, 30 extend between the members 3, 4 and the wheel rim 2 and between the members 7, 8 and the hub of these members, the members 15 being axially inclined so as to circulate cooling air through the wheel in the direction shown by the arrows. In a modification, the conical friction members converge inwards instead of outwards and the axially movable members are connected respectively to a cylinder and its piston arranged within the fixed axle 1. In this case, further, the vanes 15 are so inclined as to cause the air to circulate in the opposite direction to that shown.
