Abstract
690,581. Disc brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Nov. 9, 1950 [Nov. 10, 1949; Dec. 1, 1949], No. 27431/50. [Class 103 (i). In a wheel and disc brake assembly the hydraulic actuator is arranged to be rotatable with the wheel and a pressure-liquid containing swivel connection is arranged between the wheel and the fixed axle member on which it rotates. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the annular hydraulic actuator cylinder and piston 88, 90 are located within a space enclosed by the sideplates 18 and 20 of the split hub 12, 14, the plates 18, 20 being rotatable by bearings 26 on the fixed hollow shaft 28. Hydraulic fluid supply is led to the rotatable actuator 88, 90 by a pipe 44 through the bore of shaft 28, T branchpiece 46, an annular space 49 and a pipe 94 from the connection 68 to the actuator cylinder. Leakage of liquid from the space 49 is prevented by a swivel connection comprising rubber sealing-rings 62 surrounding the axle and pressed against a stationary bearing-member 56 by a compression spring 64 so as to press an annular projection on member 56 against a similar annular projection on member 52 rotatable with the wheel. When actuated both the cylinder 88 and piston 90 move outwardly, carrying with them pins 87 and 76 respectively, so as to compress, by pressure-plates 79, similar friction disc assemblies on each side of the wheel, the discs 74 being non-rotatably but axially movable on a member 70 rigid with the fixed axle 28, the outer faces of the side-plates 18 and 20 acting as end thrust members. The pins 76 and 87 which are staggered circumferentially so that there is no interference between their movements, carry integral lugs 82, 85 between which are secured brake release springs 86. In a further embodiment shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the friction disc assembly is applied from one end only by a circumferentially arranged series of actuator pistons 241, fluid supply to the cylinders 239 being provided through a central tube 282 coaxial with the hollow fixed shaft 218. The connection of the rotating cylinders to the fixed tube 282 is by means of a conduit 296 and socket 278, the coupling of which is made liquid-tight by means of a swing nipple 290 having a rubber-like sealing gland member 292 on its inner end. The circumferentially-arranged cylinders 239 are connected by a passage 236 which is formed by casting the side-plate 216 around a stainless steel tube and then machining out the cylinders 239 so as to pierce the tube and thus provide for entry of liquid therefrom. Adjustment for wear of the friction discs is provided by an annular screwed end thrust member 256 having teeth on its periphery engaged by a pin 260 on a rod 262 which may be rotated by a key from outside the wheel and locked by a set-screw 264.
