Abstract

710,690. Disc brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. May 19, 1953 [May 29, 1952], No. 13641/52. Class 103(1) In a spot-type disc brake, the stationary housing a comprises a single forging of arcuate outline in end elevation and of substantially V-shape in crosssection having formed in its limbs a number of pairs of axially aligned cylindrical bores b in which are mounted cast-iron or other liners c forming the fluid-pressure cylinders, the outer ends of the bores being closed by screwed plugs g which are removable to allow the friction pads or blocks m to be readily replaced when worn. The liners c are each provided with a shoulder e so that the axially extending spigot part h of each screwed plug' g enables each liner to be forced against a complementary stepped shoulder d provided in each bore. Each liner is provided with a sealing ring f and each screwed plug with a sealing ring j. Pistons n are each provided with a cup seal p and are applied by hydraulic pressure, from a master cylinder source, to press the friction pads m into engagement with the rotating disc l. Grooves q milled in the outer ends of the liners, enable the hydraulic fluid to pass into adjacent cylinders; thus applying all friction pads simultaneously. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which a drilling s in the outer part of the housing connects, via drillings t. the outer ends of one pair of opposed bores in the housing. The housing, which may be of steel, duralumin or other suitable metal or alloy having the necessary mechanical strength, is provided with an integral flange u adapted to be bolted to a non- rotating part of the vehicle adjacent to the brake disc. Specification 688,382 is referred to.
