Abstract

717,101. Disc brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. Oct. 7, 1953 [Oct. 11, 1952], No. 25526/52. Addition to 700,644. Class 103(1) In an improvement or modification of the vehicle disc brake claimed in the parent Specification, the stationary housing comprises a forged steel block 10 having a number of parallel through bores which extend between and are at right angles to the parallel end faces of the block and which are intersected by a transverse notch or gap 15 to receive the brake disc 16, secured to the vehicle wheel 33, cylindrical liners 12 are mounted in opposite ends of the bores to receive friction pads 17 and pistons 18, and separate closure members 21, 22 are secured against the ends of the block and incorporate passages or recesses 24 connecting the adjacent ends of the bores. The block 10, secured by bolts 23 to a rigid torque-taking member 29, contains three angularly spaced parallel bores which house the oppositely located piston and cylinder mechanisms and hydraulic fluid is fed under pressure from the master cylinder into a union 28 and simultaneously through the interconnecting passages and recesses 24, 25. 26 to the outer ends of all the bores in the block. Shims 36 may be provided between member 29 and the housing assembly to allow accurate axial location of the housing relative to the brake disc. Overlapping annular deflection rings 34 and 35 may conveniently be mounted on the brake disc and on the member 29 to prevent water or mud from being thrown outwardly on the braking surfaces of the disc when the vehicle is in motion.
