850,770. Disc brakes; vehicle wheels. KLAUE, H. Dec. 22, 1958 [Oct. 29, 1958], No. 41341/58. Classes 103 (1) and 144 (1). In a disc brake comprising an axially slidable brake disc provided with brake linings and rotatably mounted on extension 5 of wheel hub studs 2, the brake disc 6 is braked by means of axially movable pressure plate 17 which urges the disc into frictional contact with stationary brake housing 7 when annular hydraulic or pneumatic piston and cylinder means 14, 12 is pressurised; the latter means being protected by an annular U-section spring 19 which is gripped between the brake housing and the body 9 of the vehicle axle such that some of the brake heat and all of the braking torque from the pressure plate to the body of the axle is is absorbed by the spring 19 which also acts as a return spring. Apertures 20 and 21 are provided in the body 1 of the wheel and the hub 4 respectively to permit the passage of cooling air from the outside of the body of the wheel to the brake housing 7 as indicated by arrow 22. A heat-insulating ring 16 is arranged between the annular piston 14 and the pressure plate 17.
