Abstract

1,143,992. Brake blocks. FERODO Ltd. 13 July, 1967 [4 Aug., 1966]. No. 35020/66. Heading F2E. A railway brake block is formed from strips or segments of two or more friction materials which are so assembled that in service, that part of the composite block which bears on the part of the tread which is work-hardened by running on the rail is more abrasive than are those parts which bear on the remainder of the tread. The brake block may comprise a central layer of highly abrasive material with a layer of lower abrasive material on either side (Fig. 1, not shown) or blocks of the former material inset in the latter (Fig. 3, not shown). The Specification also describes modifications giving abrasive properties which vary gradually over the outer parts of the block (Figs. 4-6, not shown) and specifies composite materials suitable for forming the two abrasive layers.
