Abstract

677,233. Brake discs. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. Oct. 5, 1949 [Oct. 15, 1948], No. 26829/48. Class 103 (i). A brake disc, more particularly for use in aircraft wheel brakes, comprises a backing plate 1, having a series of slots or holes 3 therein between which are interwound springy metal friction elements 4 spaced away from the face of the backing-plate to provide an air-gap therebetween. The slots are preferably staggered in layers, as shown in Fig. 1, the ends of the elements 4 being joined within them as in Fig. 2. In the arrangements shown in Fig. 3, the elements 7 are annular at each side of the backing- plate and joined together within the slots. The slots may extend radially across substantially the full width of the disc, or may be arranged at an angle, as in Fig. 7, the strips 12 here being spaced alternately on each side. Preferably the backing-plate is light metal alloy, bonded fabric or plastic, about # inch thick; the friction elements, preferably about 0.005 inch thick, may be beryllium-copper, nickel-chrome, tungsten, planished wire gauze, or expanded metal.
