Abstract

Band; compensating for wear. - Brakes or clutches of the self-energizing type in which a band 2 or equivalent internal braking member floatingly mounted in a drum 1 is carried round during braking to bring one ,of its ends against a fixed abutment 6 to increase the braking effect and in which the initial braking is obtained by forcing apart the ends of the band have these ends positively connected to the ends of a yoke piece 17 which is pivoted near its centre to a crank moved by the brake pedal or lever. The brake band 2 furnished with a lining 3 carries at its ends lugs 8 connected by links 10 to arms 11 rotatable about pivots 12 mounted eccentrically on studs 13 whereby the position of the pivots can be adjusted. Links 15 connect the arms 11 with the yoke 17 rotatably mounted on a crank 19 so that by turning the crank the lugs 8 are drawn apart expanding the brake band. The rotation of the drum in either direction brings one end of the brake band 2 against the abutment 6 and acts on the other end to increase the braking action. Normally the brake band rests upon supports 4, on the anchor plate 5. Extensions 7 of the abutment 6 act as guides for the ends of the brake band. In a modification, Fig. 5, the links and arms are replaced by a chain 21 running over rollers 22 mounted on pivots 23 formed eccentrically on rotatably adjustable studs 24. The band may be replaced by a plurality of shoes. For taking up wear the studs on which the pins 12 or pulleys 22 are eccentrically mounted are rotatably adjusted.
