Band or coil; blocks and shoes acting on drums. -A means for automatically centralizing an internal brake band or brake shoes a, b when in the " off " position comprises slotted stripmembers l, each flanged at one end and slidably mounted on a base-plate h fixed to a back-plate and urged towards each other against fixed studs o by one or more springs p, so as to return to a normal position a peg q located between their flanges and carried by the band or shoes at a point remote from the cam or the like by which the brake is applied. The peg q is pivoted in the interengaging ends of two toggle links r pivoted to the shoes at s on opposite sides of an adjustable compensating-device comprising a stud with oppositely threaded ends screwed in bosses g on the shoes and rotated by a toothed disc t at its centre. In a modification the links r and peg q are omitted and the sliding members l engage directly with the toothed disc t. When the adjustment for wear is not provided the links r are omitted and the peg q mounted directly on the band, on one shoe, or on the connection between the shoes.
