Abstract
495,834. Drum brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and GATES, G. R. G. May 19, 1937, Nos. 13956 and 25880. [Class 103 (i)] A shoe brake operated by a member moving at right-angles to the movement of the shoe ends comprises a pair of sector-shaped members 22, 23 which are pivotally mounted at their apices and which roll upon cam surfaces, separate from the sector-shaped members, at their circumferential parts. The sectors pivot upon a pin 25 carried by a member 18 adapted to be moved by a rod 36 and their circumferences 28 roll upon cam surfaces 30 on plungers 32, 33 engaging the shoes 16, 17. Modifications are described in which the sectors are pivoted upon the plungers or directly on the shoes and engage cam surfaces carried by the member 18. In another modification the rod 36 itself carries the pivots for the sectors in the form of cylindrical projections or in the form of recesses engaging the convexly curved ends of the sectors. In further modifications knife-edge pivots are shown. The rod 36 is operated either by a hydraulic piston or by the mechanical brake rigging. The housing 10 carrying the mechanism 18, 22, 23, 32, 33 is slidable on the brake back-plate 11 except in the case of a self-energizing brake when the housing acts as an anchor. In this case the member 18 is adapted to float. The plunger 32 is formed of two screwed parts manually adjusted by a toothed wheel 57. Stop 58, prevents excessive adjustment. In a modified form of the invention the plungers 32, 33, carrying the cam surfaces form the hydraulic pistons operating the shoes. Specification 487,802 is referred to.
