Abstract
640,539. Internal-shoe drum brakes. BONNEBEAU, [nee DELARUE, M. T.] Dec. 30, 1947, No. 34728. Convention date, Oct. 22, 1946. [Class 103 (i)] In an internal - shoe , drum brake, two hydraulically or mechanically-operated similar shoes 10a, 10b are oppositely located and arranged to abut against fixed anchor points 18a, 18b. The shoes 10a, 10b are pivotally connected to two intermediate shoes 17a, 17b which have at their lower ends pins 20a and 20b engaging slots in two plates 21 having between them on a pin 22, a cam member 23, the lower end 23b of which is normally clear of the drum t. The leading shoe of shoes 10a and 10b on engagement with the drum acts through its abutment 18a or 18b to displace the adjacent shoe 17a or 17b in such a way as to move the cam 23 into contact with the drum. The cam 23 then pivots on its pin 22, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to spread apart the ends of shoes 17a and 17b. The second of the shoes 17a or 17b then forces the non-leading shoe 10a or 10b against the end stop on the actuator 15 so that an evenly distributed brake pressure is obtained and the braking effect is reflected back on to the actuator. The hydraulic actuator shown comprises two pistons p, the effort from which is transmitted through springs 13, the compression of which in caps 12 may be adjusted by the screws 14, and through adjustable stops 15 for setting the clearance of shoes 10a, and 10b.
