Abstract
516,951. Internal expanding brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., GATES, G. R. G., and SIDNEY, W. E. Aug. 3, 1938, No. 22984. [Class 103 (i)] A vehicle brake adapted to be operated by hydraulic or mechanical means comprises .a member which acts in tension to move the brake shoe or shoes outwardly into contact with a rotating drum, the member being connected by a lost motion device with the piston of a hydraulic cylinder unit, and by a second lost motion device with mechanical brake rigging. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, brake shoes 12, 13 are adapted to be pressed outwardly by means which include plungers 39, 40, pivoted sector-shaped members 35, 36, and a tension rod 32. The rod 32 passes through an extension 20 of a piston 19 and at its inner end is screw-threaded to receive a collar 30. The collar is connected by a pin 31 to a tubular shell 26 which is flanged at both ends. At one end it is provided with a collar 51 against which bears the head 50 of a rod 48. The rod is screw-threaded at 49 for attachment to a mechanical brake rigging. The shell 26 is adapted to have limited sliding movement within anenlarged portion of a cylinder 17. When the brake is operated hydraulically the piston 19 acts through the flange 29 to move the collar 30 within the shell 26. Mechanical operation is transmitted through the shell 26 and flange 29 without affecting the piston 19. The collar 30 of the tension rod 32 is formed with a diametral slot for engagement by a ridge 53 on the rod 48, whereby the position of the tension rod may be adjusted. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, the piston 19 is normally held in its inoperative position by a spring 63. The rod 48 is fixed to a shell 26a which is flanged at 29a to engage a collar 58 fixed to the tension rod 32. Specification 495,834 is referred to.
