Abstract

1451579 Trailer over-run brakes; internal shoe drum brakes HAHN FAHRZEUGBAU GmbH 9 Dec 1974 [28 Dec 1973] 53066/74 Heading F2E An over-run brake for trailers including an internal shoe drum brake 7, Fig. 1, operable by a hand-brake lever 3 or a draw rod 2 and member 4 through a floating expanded device 11, firm support for the primary shoe 8 being provided during forward travel 19 and the brake action being almost eliminated in the case of reverse travel 22, is characterized in that the ends of the shoes remote from the expander are supported on components including a pivot cam 25, Fig. 2, which in forward travel abuts a first fixed stop 28 as a result of the moments exterted on the shoes, and in reverse travel pivots to enable the secondary shoe 9 to move (circumferentially) a spring member 40 being inserted between the expander device 11 and the axis of the pivot cam; a second fixed stop 48 is provided by the pivot cam to enable a greater expansion of the shoes by the hand-brake lever 3. In operation, during over-run braking, the primary shoe 8, acting at point 39 of cam 25, Fig. 2, urges the latter clockwise about its axis of rotation 35, to abut first stop 28, because of the direction of travel 19, Fig. 1, of the drum 12, despite the greater lever arm 44 of the counterclockwise moment of the secondary shoe 9. Spring 40 is compressed. During reversing, on account of the opposite directon of rotation, 22, of drum 12, counterclockwise rotation by the secondary shoe 9, including the effect of the greater lever arm 44, prevails, and the cam 25 pivots to the position of Fig. 3. In this position lines 46, 47, of cam 25 constitute the second stop, and, the lower end of shoe 9 being nearer fixed housing 24 than in Fig. 2, the shoes are substantially ineffective. With the trailer stationary, hand-brake-lever operation produces equal forces at the shoes, so the greater leverage by shoe 9 pivots cam 25 to the Fig. 3 position again, after which the leverage provided by hand-brake-lever 3, which is greater than the leverage of draw rod 2 and member 4 in over-run braking, on transmission member 5, Fig. 1, serves to ensure maximum braking effect.
