Abstract

1,084,413. Internal shoe-drum brakes. BENDIX CORPORATION. Dee. 28, 1964 [Jan. 6, 1964], No. 52569/64. Heading F2E. In an internal shoe-drum brake having a pair of brake shoes 12, 14 with one pair of adjacent shoe ends connected to an hydraulic brake actuator 30, the other pair of adjacent shoe ends being mounted on an anchoring means 32 carried by the stationary back plate 10, an adjusting lever 40 is pivotally mounted on one of the brake shoes 12 and connected to the second shoe 14 by means of a strut 62 whereby the position of the brake shoes with respect of the rotatable drum 20 is adjusted by pivotal movement of the adjusting lever which is held in the adjusted position by means of a pawl 46 co-operating with teeth 44 on the adjusting lever, resilient means 74 and 80 being provided for urging the shoes into a release position and for maintaining an operating connection between the strut 62 and the second brake shoe 14 respectively, a lost motion being provided between the adjusting lever 40 and the strut 62 in order to enable a predetermined amount of shoe movement to take place prior to the pivoting of the adjusting lever 40 by the struts 62 so that when the shoes are spread apart beyond the predetermined amount the adjusting lever:40 is pivoted relative to the shoe 12 to assume a new position to adjust the release position of the brake shoes. The strut 62 has at each end thereof an open-ended slot 64, 66, one of which (66) receives the adjusting lever 40 and the web 22 of the shoe 12 which takes support on the closed end 78 of the slot through the intermediary of the adjusting lever and the other slot 64 receives the web 28 of the second .shoe 14. A projection 68 on the strut 62 extends into an opening 70 formed in the adjusting lever 40 and is spaced from the inner edge 72 of the opening opposite to the respective closed end 78 of the adjacent slot 66 and the projection for a distance corresponding to the lost motion. The end of the strut 62 associated with the second shoe 14 is connected to a mechanically actuated parking brake lever 54 pivotally mounted at 56 on the second shoe 14 and which takes support on the closed end of the slot 64 of the strut 62 through the intermediary of the mechanically actuated parking brake lever. A resilient member 34 is operatively connected to each of the brake shoe webs to hold the ends of the webs in engagement with the surfaces 36 and 38 of the anchoring means 32.
