Abstract

1467454 Internal shoe drum brakes KOBER MANPAR AG 23 July 1974 [30 July 1973] 32550/74 Heading F2E An internal shoe drum brake for trailers having an over-running braking system comprises a part of floatingly mounted brake shoes 1, 2 operatively connected at one pair of adjacent ends by a spreading assembly 3 and at the other pair of ends by a transmission assembly 6. The assembly 6 is such that on braking with the trailer travelling in a forward direction both shoes are applied firmly to the brake drum but on the trailer travelling backwards the assembly moves to allow the shoes to move away from the drum thus eliminating the tendency of the overrunning mechanism to apply the brakes. The assembly comprises an adjustable strut 11 which engages the shorter arm in the form of a cam 10 of a bell-crank lever 9, the layer arm 17 carrying a roller which abuts an end of the brake shoe 2. The free end of the longer arm 17 of the lever 9 is as shown, bifurcated and extends around the end of the brake shoe. The roller 18 is urged into abutment with the brake shoe 2 by a torsion spring 19. The spring 19 may be anchored in the back plate or by a brake shoe pull-off strip 5. During braking with the trailer moving in the reverse direction the spreading assembly expands with the result that the shoe 2 abuts a stop 23, the brakes then being appliable by a hand actuated transmission which further expands the spreading assembly.
