Abstract

1493832 Internal shoe drum brakes for trailers L C CHOUINGS 3 Jan 1975 [28 Feb 1974] 08731/77 Divided out of 1493831 Heading F2E The brake includes torque-limitation means providing a clearance which is reduced or eliminated when braking occurs with the drum rotating in one direction, R, but which is maintained when braking occurs with the drum rotating in the opposite direction F. A lever 61 is pivoted on a pin 62 fixed in relation to the back plate 58; the lever is urged against a stop 65 (one side of a fixed pin 64) by a spring 72 connected between the upper end of the lever and shoe 54. Shoe 55 engages the lever at 71, and shoe 54 at 69. When the drum is rotating in the forward direction F and the brake is applied by a floating actuator 51, spring 72 and shoe 54 both hold the lever in the position shown, so the lower end of shoe 55 remains in the position shown, with a clearance 67 between a end of a slot 63 in lever 61 and a second stop 66 (the other side of pin 64) being maintained. For brake application in the reverse direction, R, of drum rotation, the force of shoe 55 acting at a greater radius about pivot 62 than the force of shoe 54 overcomes the latter force and that of the spring 72, so lever 61 pivots, and clearance 67 substantially eliminated. Hence the lower ends of the shoes move closer together while the upper ends move further apart. Travel of the service actuator is limited, so braking torque is minimal during reverse rotation (e.g. on reversing the trailer on which the brake is mounted). A parking brake actuator (not shown), with greater travel, serves to take up the clearance and apply the shoes when the trailer is stationary.
