4 Claims. (Cl. 188-78) a brake having a simple and inexpensive means for effectively spreading the brake shoes from 10 their anchors for engagement with a drum.
Another object of the invention is to provide a floating toggle controlled by an operating cable for effectively engaging the shoes of a brake with a drum. n
A further object of the invention is to provide a brake having a plurality of shoes adapted to be moved into engagement with a drum by a floating or swinging toggle operated through a controlled cable, so that the initial pull on the 20 cable will slide the articulating end of the shoes against the drum and further pull or tension on the cable will spread the shoes to engage the drum.
The invention contemplates a simple structure 25 having relatively few parts, so that the manufacture thereof may be economically facilitated, both as to parts and their assembly.
Further objects and advantages of the invention reside in the various combinations hereinafter described and claimed as will appear upon reference to the following specificatiomand to the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring to the drawing for more specific details of the invention, I represents a backing plate having positioned thereon anchors II and I2. Brake shoes I3 and I4 of a conventional type are positioned on the backing plate and secured against displacement by suitable steady rests I5 which may be bolted or otherwise secured to the plate. The shoes I 3 and I4 are connected at their articulating ends by a suitable adjustment screw I6 and their opposite ends have shoulders I1 and I8 adapted to engage the respective anchors II and I2 where they are normally retained when the shoes are in an off position by the return springs I9 and 20.

In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the toggle 22 comprises a bell crank lever 24 having one leg pivoted to the shoe I4, its other leg connected to the cable and its fulcrum pivotally connected to one end of a link 25, the other end of which is pivotally connected to the shoe I3, so
that the initial movement of the lever operated through the cable slides the shoes upon the steady rests to engage the articulating ends thereof with the drum and further movement of the lever spreads the shoes to fully engage the drum.
In the modification, the bell crank lever 24 has one leg pivoted to one end of a link 26, the other end of which is pivoted to a stud 21 positioned on the backing plate between the anchors II and I2, and the other leg of the lever is connected to the cable. The pivotal end of the bell crank lever is connected by a link 28 to theshoe I3 and the apex or fulcrum of the lever is connected by a link 29 to the shoe I4.
In this structure, the bell crank lever swings on the link 26 and is, therefore, slightly different in action from the toggle illustrated in the preferred form, in that the initial movement of the lever which slides the shoes to engage their articulat- 30 ing ends of the drum causes the shoe I4 to engage the drum slightly in advance of the engagement of the shoe I5 withv the drum and hence a different action is obtained than where the shoes 85 Although this invention has been described in connection with certain specific embodiments, the principles involved are susceptible of numerous other applications that will readily occur to persons skilled in the art. The invention is, therefore, to be limited only as indicated by the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the various features of the invention, what I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A brake comprising a backing plate, a drum associated therewith, braking elements movably positioned on the backing plate and adapted to co-operate with the drum and having webs paralleling the backing plate, means for operating the braking elements including a floating bell crank lever connected to the braking elements and having an operating part swinging in the space between the backing plate and one of said webs. n
29A brake comprising a backing plate, a drum associated therewith, braking elements on the backing plate arranged for cooperation with the drum, means for operating the braking elements including a member pivoted on the backing plate, a bell crank lever supported by the member and swinging in a plane paralleling the backing plate, and links connecting the bell crank lever to the braking element.
3. A brake comprising a backing plate, a drum associated therewith, braking elements on the backing plate arranged for cooperation with the drum, means for operating the braking elements including a link having one end pivoted on the backing plate, a bell crank lever having one end pivoted to the other end of the link, a link connecting the pivoted end of the bell crank lever to one of the braking elements, a link connecting the knee of the bell crank lever to the other braking element and a tension member for applying the end of the lever.
4. A brake comprising a drum, a backing plate at the openside of the drum, friction means within the drum having a stifiening web paralleling the backing plate and arranged to anchor at one end when the drum is turning in one direction and at the other end when the drum is turning in the other direction, a lever pivotally connected to one of said ends and connected by a link to the other of said ends and which has an operating part movable in a plane paralleling the plane of the backing plate and arranged beside and parallel to said web, and a tension operating element extending through the backing plate approximately at right angles to the operating part of the lever and connected thereto beside said web.
