Abstract
627,347. Drum-brakes. SERVO-FREIN DEWANDRE SOC. ANON. April 16, 1947, No. 10132. Convention date, Feb. 16, 1946. [Class 103 (i)] The shoes of a brake are brought up to the brake drum by a cam acting on one end of the shoes, the effective pressure being applied by force-multiplying mechanism actuated by the cam operating member and acting on the other ends of the shoes. During release only the cam returns so that the force-multiplying mechanism serves to adjust the shoes for wear. As shown, the shaft 4 of a cam 8 which engages rollers on the lower ends of brake shoes 3 is connected to the operating rod 31 and by an arm 5, link 27, pin-and-slot 29, 30 to an arm 16, coupled through a friction ratchet 15, to a shaft 14 which drives through worm gear 12, 13 a right- and left-hand threaded shaft carrying nut members 23, 24 to which the shoes are pivoted. During initial movement of the rod 31 to apply the brake, the shoes are moved into contact with the drum by the cam. The link 28 then engages the pin 30 so that the effective pressure is applied to the shoes through the worm gear and screw and nut mechanism. During this second stage, the rollers 9, 9<SP>1</SP> ride upon cylindrical surfaces of the cam which thus has no further action on the shoes. During the release action, the cam and the arm 16 are returned to normal position by springs 7, 18, the arm abutting on a stop 17, but since the shaft 14 is not turned, the normal clearance of the shoes from the drum remains constant irrespective of wear of the friction linings.
