Abstract

536,933. Internal expanding brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and GATES, G. R. G. April 2, 1940, No. 5916. [Class 103 (i)] In a brake of the self-energizing type the force-transmitting device comprises a pair of levers disposed between the ends of the shoes remote from the externally actuated brakeapplying means, each of the levers being pivoted at one end and engaging at the other end with the other lever and each shoe being engaged by an intermediate portion of the corresponding lever. In the construction, shown in Fig. 4, with the levers 47, 48 in operation by engagement of the toe 49 with an intermediate part of the lever 48, the levers 47, 48 are pivoted by cylindrical projections 51 thereon to a lozenge-shaped support member 38 which is angularly adjustable by means of a screw- and nut-device to regulate the distance between the ends of the shoes 16, 17 engaging cylindrical projections 54, 55 respectively on the levers 47, 48. In Fig. 4, 16 is the primary shoe transmitting pressure to the secondary shoe 17 in the proportion of about half the applied force.
