[Class 103 (i)] A band brake applicable as a reaction device for epicyclic gears and for other purposes comprises a primary band adapted to be tightened about an inner secondary band which is independenty anchored at about its middle point, the arrangement being such that an efficient braking action is provided with either direction of rotation of the drum and that the central axis of rotation is not distorted. A primary band a adapted to be tightened by force applied to its two ends f, k, has secured thereto strips x<SP>1</SP>, x<SP>2</SP> of friction lining and a backing w<SP>1</SP>, w<SP>2</SP>. The secondary band comprises a strip of friction lining x with a backing w anchored by a lug 10 and links 12 to the casing 15, the lug passing through a slot in the band a. The band w engages a circumferential groove in the band a and is normally held in contact with that band by a spring 20 secured to the links 12 and bearing at 21 on the band a. An operating lever l is pivoted by a pin m bearing in recesses a pair of laterally spaced plate-like links n which may be anchored directly to the casing but which as shown are pivoted at o to a strut p' secured at p" to a casing, the ends of the strut and links being disposed in a recess in a frame member p. The lever l also bears at t on a strut u on a pull rod h connected to the end f of the band a and bears on the other end k of the band through a strut r. The links n are normally held in position in which they contact the band a at k<SP>1</SP> by a friction device n<SP>1</SP> interposed between them and the strut p' and they are forced against the band when by raising the lever l the brake is applied. Means such as shown in Specification 370,442, [Group XXIV], may be provided for operating the lever l.
