Abstract

333,734. Oliver, A. V., and De Lavaud Free-Wheel Differential, Ltd. Aug. 13, 1929. Band.-Brake bands for freewheel differential devices of the kind described in Specification 316,312, [Class 80 (ii), Gearing, Variable-speed &c.], comprise a continuous ring-like outer portion 1 and an inner portion 2 adapted normally to rotate with the brake drum and so formed and associated with the outer portion that when the band is held stationary by arrest of the outer portion at any point, constant braking efforts are provided which have different values for forward and reverse rotation of the drum. The outer portion 1 is recessed at 7 to accommodate an arcshaped pin 8 and the inner portion is provided with end flanges 10, 11, one of which slides over the pin while the other is secured against one wall of the recess. A spring 12 acts on the flange 10 to cause the inner portion 2 to grip the drum, and the outer portion is provided with a number of radial stops 13. When the drum is rotating clockwise and an abutment is moved into the path of one of the stops 13, the inner portion 2 will tend to become more closely wrapped upon the drum, and in the reverse direction of rotation, the tendency will be for the inner portion to become unwrapped exerting a lesser braking effort. Since the force is transmitted to the inner portion 2 always at the point 11 the braking effort is constant whichever abutment 13 is arrested. To guide the outer portion upon the inner portion, slots and pins 14, 15 may be provided. A brako lining 3 is secured to the inner portion by rivets 4 and to facilitate mounting, the outer portion is split and the ends 5 connected by a rivet or screw 6. In a modification, the inner band is adapted to grip the drum 7 by its own resiliency and secured to the outer portion by a stud. Instead of securing the two portions of the band together, means such as an abutment may be provided for limiting relative movement between them.
