Abstract

750,279. Internal shoe-drum brakes. BRISSON, L. C. Nov. 23, 1954 [Nov. 23, 1953; Nov. 24, 1953], No. 33917/54. Class 103 (1). In an internal shoe-drum brake, as shown in Fig. 1, a primary shoe 18 is applied by an hydraulic actuator 15 so that, if the drum rotation is normal as indicated by the arrow, the shoe and actuator 15 tend to be carried circumferentially thus rotating a shoe carrier 13 so as, through member 11, to pivot a member 6 about a fixed pivot 4 and thus, by engagement of a pin 28 with the end of a lever 25, to pivot the latter about a fixed pin 21 and apply a braking force to one end of secondary shoe 29 through a block 27, the other end of shoe 29 being anchored on a block 23. It is stated that this arrangement provides a substantially constant torque effort despite variations in the coefficient of friction. Fig. 4 shows a similarly operated brake but using two secondary shoes in addition to the primary shoe and, for reverse rotation of the drum, the two secondary shoes 29 and 291 are applied, on movement of carrier member 13, by levers 25 and 25<SP>1</SP> so as to anchor on their end pivots. Another form of the brake having similar characteristics for forward drum rotation only is also described. Specifications 728,864 and 737,934 are referred to.
