Abstract

1,046,488. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Oct. 21, 1963 [Sept. 12, 1962], No. 34784/62. Heading F2E. In a disc brake pads 14 having backing plates 15 are applied to opposite sides of a disc 11 by complementary bell-crank levers pivoted at 17 in a stationary housing 10. Arm 19 of each lever is engaged by an actuator 21 and engages an abutment 16 on a backing plate while the arm 18 extends towards the disc and is inclined rearwardly at a small angle with respect to the normal direction of rotation of the disc, its free end being engaged in an opening 26 in the backing plate of the adjacent pad. When the brake is applied with the disc rotating in the normal direction the pads and backing plates tend to move circumferentially with the disc so that the torque on the backing plates applies to the levers a turning moment which increases the force with which the pads are applied to the disc. An automatic adjusting device is provided for each pad and comprises a rod 27 pivoted in the base 25 of each lever, each rod extending through two shoes 31, 32 which grip the rods and have limited movement in recesses 28.
