Abstract
767,706. Combined disc and drum brake. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Aug. 24, 1954 [Nov. 16, 1953], No. 24612/54. Class 103 (1). A brake has two friction shoes 10 and 12 each of which is adapted, for a particular direction of drum rotation, to pivot about its pivot mounting 14 or 16 into engagement with the drum 24 as a result of the application of fluid pressure between the pistons 46 in cylinders 44 carried by the units, by which friction pads 48 are engaged with radial faces on the drum casing. Thus, when rotation of the drum is anti-clockwise, since the shoe lining 40 tends to be displaced away from the drum into engagement with an abutment 70, braking is produced by disc friction for unit 10 and disc and shoe friction for unit 12. Similarly with clockwise rotation braking is by disc action for unit 12, and disc and shoe action for unit 10, but the rotational movement produced on the shoe of unit 12 is transmitted through a strut member 50 to the shoe of unit 10 to increase the applying force thereon. The brake shoes may be applied mechanically through a cable 86 and lever 54 with pins 56 and 82 acting as fulcrums. In another embodiment described, the strut member between the shoes comprises automatic adjustment mechanism. Specifications 758,882 and 767,707 are referred to.
