Abstract

324,439. Thornycroft & Co., J. I., and Barford, V. G. Nov. 10, 1928. Band; blocks and shoes acting on drums. - To prevent the operating cam of an internal expanding brake from producing cross-drag on the ends of the band or shoes means such as links are interposed between the ends of the band or shoes and the cam which, together with the links, is capable of limited floating movement. An anchor bracket 5 secured to the wheel axle casing 3 of a vehicle carries a link 4<a> provided with pins 4b which serve to support the brake band 2 at its middle part. A plate 12 disposed between the bracket 5 and the casing 3 carries a bracket 11 with pivot pins 10, 10<a> from which depend a pair of links or arms 9, 9<a> arranged between the cam 7 and the ends of the band 2. The cam spindle 8 is also mounted in the bracket 11 and by reason of the fact that the plate 12 has freedom of movement between the parts 3, 5 the cam is free to float. Release springs 14, 14a, 16 extend from the band to the bracket 5 and between the ends of the band respectively. In applying the brake the pressure of the cam is transmitted to the ends of the band by the links 9, 9<a> which thus take any drag exerted by the cam in a radial direction.
